Welcome to the Hickory Ridge Elementary School Media Center

Our mission is to inspire a love of learning, foster creativity, and empower our school community to become informed, ethical, and engaged global citizens.

We provide:

  • Access to Resources: A diverse collection of books, digital tools, and learning materials to support academic success and personal growth.
  • Innovation and Technology: Hands-on experiences with cutting-edge technology and collaborative spaces for exploration, creation, and problem-solving.
  • Support for Lifelong Learning: Programs and services that promote critical thinking, digital literacy, and ethical use of information.

  • The Clever Digital Hub allows schools and districts to organize and provide easy access to educational apps, websites, and digital tools in one centralized location. It enables students and teachers to seamlessly navigate learning resources. Students can access digital library collections by signing in to their student Clever account.

  • Storybook Pumpkin Contest – pumpkins due to the Media Center on Monday, October 27th.

    5th Grade Spooky Writing Challenge – stories can either be submitted  on Google Drive to Heather.Shulman@apps.cabarrus.k12.nc.us or written to Mrs. Shulman due October 27th

    NC Children’s Book Award – 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students read at least 4 of the junior level books nominated for the NC Children’s Book Award and give Mrs. Shulman a small summary of each book.  Student will receive a goody bag upon completing 4 of the nominated books. Reading challenge is due March 18, 2026.

    Genre Reading Challenge – all studens are encouraged to enter the Genre Reading Contest.  They can either complete the digital version found on my Clever page or see Mrs. Shulman for a paper copy.  Completed challenge papers are due to Mrs. Shulman by May 1, 2026.

  • The Scholastic Book Fair is an exciting event that brings the joy of books to our students while supporting our library programs. Parents, you can make shopping easy and cash-free by filling your child’s eWallet, a digital payment option that empowers students to shop independently while staying within budget.  We also need volunteers to help make this event a success! From setting up displays to assisting young readers in finding their next favorite book, your time and support make a big difference.

    Students can expand their access to library collections by linking their school accounts with the public library and its resources (specifically SORA or NC Kids Digital).

  • Third Grade Library Council – Meeting Dates

    Fourth & Fifth Grade Library Council – Meeting Dates

    Fifth Grade Deputies – 5th graders can apply to become a Deputy throughout the school year.  Complete this permission slip and turn it into Mrs. Shulman and she will notify the student of their assigned duty.

    Elementary Battle of the Books (EBOB) –  is for students who love to read and like a little friendly competition.

    • Permission Slips Due Tuesday, September 24th
    • Parents MUST complete the CCS QR Code by October 1st
    • First Meeting: Thursday, October 16th
    • Testing Day: Thursday, November 6th
    • Cost: T-Shirt $18, Transporation: ??
    • Competition Date: February 12th @ The Boys & Girls Club in Concord, NC. Guests may not attend due to limited space.
