5th Grade Deputies

Daily

7:50–8:15

(6-week rotations)

The 5th Grade Deputies program allows students to take on leadership roles that support our school community. Each deputy serves in a 6-week rotation, helping in areas such as the media center, school beautification, safety patrol, photography, cafeteria assistance, or with Kindergarten and 1st grade book checkout. Deputies help kick off each morning with teamwork, responsibility, and HRES pride!

Chess Club

Mondays or Tuesdays 3:15-4:15

(Enrollment opens in August and December)

Checkmate! The Chess Club offers students a fun and engaging way to learn and play the game of chess. Whether a beginner or an experienced player, every student can sharpen their skills, think strategically, and enjoy friendly matches in a supportive environment. It’s a winning experience for all!

Drama Kids

Wednesdays

3:15–4:15

Drama Kids offers fun and engaging classes that help students build confidence, creativity, and teamwork while developing acting and public speaking skills. Through our unique curriculum, students learn to express themselves, think creatively, and grow as leaders — all while having a great time. Come see why at Drama Kids, we set the stage for success!

Battle of the Books

Thursdays 3:00-4:00

(October–February)

EBOB is open to 4th and 5th graders who love to read and enjoy friendly competition! A team of 12 students represents HRES in the countywide Battle of the Books, answering questions about characters, plots, and settings from 15 selected titles chosen by the NC School Library Media Association. It’s a fun way to celebrate reading, teamwork, and a love of great books!

Library Council

Once per month for each grade level on Mondays

3:00-4:00

The Library Council is made up of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders who share a love of books and a passion for reading. Members meet monthly to share ideas for new books, engaging activities, and ways to inspire a schoolwide love of reading. Their goal is to help every student at HRES discover the joy and excitement that comes from getting lost in a good book.

Mad Science Club

Thursdays

3:00-4:30

(8 week fall and winter sessions)

Mad Science brings STEM to life with exciting, hands-on experiments that ignite curiosity and creativity! Each week, students explore fascinating topics like rockets, reactions, space, and sound—building confidence and a lasting love of discovery. Our clubs blend learning and laughter to make science unforgettable!

Soccer Shots

Thursday

3:15-4:15

(Fall and Spring Sessions)

Soccer Shots offers a fun, high-energy program for K–2 students that builds soccer skills while promoting teamwork and character development. Each week, players learn new techniques and practice them through games and activities before wrapping up with a scrimmage to put their skills into action. Soccer Shots emphasizes sportsmanship, respect, and confidence—both on and off the field!

VEX Robotics Club

Mondays

3:15–4:15 & Wednesdays

7:00–7:45 (September–March, extended for qualifying teams)

The Hickory Ridge Elementary VEX Robotics Club invites 4th and 5th graders to dive into hands-on challenges where they design, build, and program robots. Students develop problem-solving, teamwork, and STEM skills as they bring their ideas to life and learn through experimentation. The competitive aspect of VEX Robotics fuels creativity and curiosity, often sparking a passion for future STEM careers.
